Biofield Therapy in Oncology: Mechanistic Insights and Implications for Cancer Care
CCH x Phenomena Speaker Series with Dr. Lorenzo Cohen
Biofield therapy, sometimes called energy medicine, encompasses a range of approaches that propose that subtle biological or energetic processes may influence health and disease. These approaches have been used for centuries in various healing traditions and are increasingly being explored within modern integrative medicine. While biofield therapies are used by many patients as part of their cancer care, the biological mechanisms underlying their potential effects remain poorly understood and are an emerging area of scientific investigation. Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, will share findings from a multi-year preclinical study, published in Cancer Medicine, examining biofield therapy in models of pancreatic cancer.
Working with cell cultures and mice to rule out placebo effects, the research team found that biofield therapy reduced cancer cell proliferation and, in repeated studies, reduced liver metastasis in mouse models by more than half. They also observed changes in mitochondrial structure, shifts in cell membrane voltage, and suppression of cancer-related genes including FOXM1. The study used sham, incubator, and colony controls and three independent practitioners.
Dr. Cohen will discuss what these results do and do not tell us, why pancreatic cancer was the focus, and what comes next.
There will be a Q&A at the end of the presentation. Come with questions!

About Lorenzo Cohen, PHD
Lorenzo Cohen, PhD, is the Richard E. Haynes Distinguished Professor in Clinical Cancer Prevention and Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Cohen is a founding member and past president of the Society for Integrative Oncology. Dr. Cohen leads a team conducting research and delivering clinical care in integrative medicine practices such as meditation, yoga, hypnosis, music therapy, acupuncture, massage, diet, exercise, and other strategies aimed at reducing the negative aspects of cancer treatment and improving quality of life and clinical outcomes.
What you'll learn
More than 50% less liver metastasis. How biofield therapy affected pancreatic cancer cell growth and spread in preclinical models.
Changes at the cellular level. The biological shifts researchers observed, from mitochondrial structure to suppression of the cancer-driving gene FOXM1.
Designed to rule out placebo. How cell and animal models, sham controls, and three independent practitioners built rigor into the study.
What the results do and do not tell us. Why pancreatic cancer was the focus, the open questions that remain, and where this emerging area of research goes next.
